Hotshot Dispatch Services

Specialized hotshot dispatch services finding expedited, time-sensitive loads at $2.00-$4.00+ per mile. We keep your gooseneck loaded and moving.

Why Choose Expert Hotshot Dispatch?

Hotshot trucking uses medium-duty trucks with gooseneck trailers to haul time-sensitive and smaller loads. Our hotshot dispatchers specialize in finding expedited freight, partial loads, and niche hauls that pay well for the equipment size.

01

Lower Entry Cost

Hotshot lets you enter trucking with a pickup truck and gooseneck trailer instead of a full semi. Lower equipment costs mean faster path to profitability.

02

Expedited Premium

Time-sensitive loads pay premium rates. When a manufacturer needs a part tomorrow, they'll pay more for the speed and flexibility a hotshot provides.

03

Access More Facilities

Your smaller rig can access construction sites, farms, and facilities that full-size trucks can't reach — opening up exclusive freight opportunities.

04

Faster Turnaround

Lighter loads mean faster loading and unloading. More loads per week translates to competitive weekly revenue despite lower per-load revenue.

What Is Hotshot Dispatch?

Hotshot dispatch is for guys running gooseneck or bumper-pull flatbeds behind a pickup or medium-duty truck — usually a Ram 5500, F-550, or similar rig. The whole point of hotshot is speed: smaller, time-sensitive loads that full-size semis can't get to fast enough or aren't worth sending a 53-footer for. We find the loads that actually make sense for your setup — partial flatbed freight, LTL equipment moves, urgent parts — and negotiate rates that account for your faster transit times and flexibility. A lot of hotshot guys waste hours on Truckstop and DAT fighting over $1.50/mile scraps; we keep you running at $2.50-$4.00/mile on freight that fits your trailer.

Hotshot Operations Guide

Insider knowledge for running hotshot freight efficiently and profitably.

01Weight Limits by Class

Non-CDL Under 26,000 GVWR

If your truck and loaded trailer combo stays under 26,001 lbs GVWR, you do not need a CDL. This is the sweet spot for many hotshot operators — a Ram 5500 (19,500 GVWR) plus a 7,000 lb gooseneck and ~12,000 lbs of cargo keeps you legal without a CDL.

CDL Class A Over 26,000 GVWR

Once your combined GVWR exceeds 26,000 lbs, you need a Class A CDL. The advantage is you can haul heavier loads — up to the 80,000 lb federal limit — which opens up steel, equipment, and heavy oilfield freight that non-CDL operators cannot touch.

DOT Number & Authority

Any hotshot operation crossing state lines needs a DOT number and operating authority (MC number). Even non-CDL operators need this if hauling freight interstate. We verify your authority is active and your insurance filings are current before dispatching a single load.

02Expedited & Time-Critical Freight

Emergency Oilfield Runs

When a drilling rig goes down, every hour of downtime costs the operator $50K+. Oilfield emergency freight pays $3.00-$5.00+/mile because speed is everything. We have relationships with oilfield suppliers in the Permian, Bakken, and Eagle Ford who call us first when a rig needs parts NOW.

Same-Day Delivery Premium

Loads that must deliver same-day or next-morning command 30-50% rate premiums over standard freight. The key is being positioned in the right market — your dispatcher monitors expedited boards and broker hotlines for time-critical loads that match your location.

After-Hours Pickup

Many expedited loads require pickup outside normal business hours. Being willing to pick up at 2 AM or on a Sunday puts you ahead of operators who only run 9-to-5. We coordinate after-hours access with shippers and factor the inconvenience into the rate negotiation.

03Partial & LTL Optimization

Stacking Partial Loads

A 40ft gooseneck can often fit 2-3 partial shipments going the same direction. Instead of hauling one $1,200 partial load, you stack two partials for $2,000+ on the same trip. Your dispatcher evaluates multi-stop partials to maximize revenue per mile.

LTL Load Boards

Beyond DAT and Truckstop, hotshot-specific boards like LTL freight exchanges and equipment dealer networks have loads sized perfectly for your trailer. We monitor these niche sources alongside the major boards to find loads that full-size carriers overlook.

Multi-Pickup Routing

When running partials, pickup order matters. We route your pickups to minimize deadhead between stops and make sure the loading sequence means the first-off piece is last-on. Bad sequencing wastes time and risks cargo damage from re-securing.

Industries We Serve — Hotshot Freight

We dispatch hotshot loads across these high-demand verticals.

Oil & Gas (Urgent Parts)

Halliburton, Schlumberger, and Baker Hughes need drill bits, BOP components, pipe fittings, and wellhead equipment ASAP when a rig goes down. Permian Basin, Eagle Ford, Bakken — when a drilling operation is losing $50K/day in downtime, they'll pay premium rates for a hotshot that's rolling in 2 hours.

Construction (Time-Sensitive)

General contractors and subs need steel beams, concrete forms, scaffolding, and tools moved between job sites fast. When a $10M commercial build is waiting on materials, they're not calling a freight broker — they need a hotshot that can pick up in 2 hours and deliver same-day or next-morning.

Auto Parts (Dealer-to-Dealer)

Ford, GM, and Toyota dealerships swap parts, engines, and transmissions between locations when a customer's vehicle is on the lift waiting. AutoNation, Penske, and Lithia group dealers use hotshot regularly for urgent dealer trades and warranty parts — time matters more than cost.

Agricultural Equipment

During planting and harvest, when a combine header or tractor attachment breaks, John Deere and AGCO dealers need parts or replacement implements moved to the farm NOW. Midwest and Plains states — seasonal but the rates are strong because the farmer's entire crop is on the line.

Trade Shows & Events

Freeman, GES, and Shepard Exposition ship booth displays, AV equipment, and promotional materials to convention centers across the country. Strict show deadlines with marshaling yard appointments — if the booth isn't set up by 8 AM Thursday, the exhibitor loses their $50K investment.

Hotshot Dispatch Challenges We Solve

Every equipment type has unique challenges. Here's how we handle them.

Weight & Size Limits

Hotshot trailers have lower weight capacity than full-size flatbeds. Our dispatchers verify every load fits within your GVWR and trailer dimensions to prevent overweight issues.

Market Volatility

Hotshot freight is heavily influenced by oil, gas, and construction markets. We diversify your load mix across industries to smooth out market swings.

CDL vs Non-CDL

Some hotshot loads require a CDL while others don't. We match loads to your licensing status and ensure all requirements are met before booking.

Hotshot Dispatch FAQ

Do I need a CDL for hotshot dispatch?

It depends on your GVWR. If your truck and loaded trailer combination exceeds 26,000 lbs, you need a CDL. Many hotshot operators run under this threshold without a CDL, but having one opens up more load options.

What rates can hotshot loads pay?

Hotshot loads typically range from $2.00-$4.00+ per mile. Expedited and emergency loads can push rates significantly higher. Oilfield loads in active basins often command premium rates.

What type of trailer is best for hotshot?

Most hotshot carriers run 40-foot gooseneck flatbed trailers, which provide the best balance of capacity and versatility. We dispatch for various gooseneck configurations.

Can you find partial loads for hotshot?

Yes. Partial and LTL loads are a hotshot specialty. We find freight that full-size trucks don't want because it doesn't fill a 53-foot trailer, but pays great for your smaller setup.

Is hotshot profitable compared to full-size trucking?

Hotshot can be very profitable due to lower equipment costs, lower fuel consumption, and the ability to access more loads including expedited freight. Many operators earn competitive net income with lower overhead.

How do you screen hotshot loads for fraud?

Hotshot loads are disproportionately targeted by scammers because the equipment is easier to steal. We verify every broker's MC number and operating status on FMCSA, check their payment and complaint history on carrier411, and never dispatch to unverified pickup locations. If a broker cannot provide a legitimate rate confirmation with their company details, we do not book it.

What insurance does a hotshot operator need?

At minimum, you need $750K-$1M auto liability (most brokers require $1M), $100K cargo insurance, and general liability. If you are hauling oilfield freight, many oil companies require additional $1M excess liability. Non-CDL operators sometimes get cheaper premiums, but coverage requirements are the same.

How does detention pay work for hotshot?

Hotshot detention follows the same structure as full-size trucking — typically $50-$75/hour after 2 hours free time. Since hotshot loads are often expedited, detention is even more painful because every hour sitting is an hour you could be running the next urgent load. We build detention clauses into every rate con.

Can you dispatch hotshot loads into Canada?

Yes. Cross-border hotshot into Canada requires PAPS clearance and your operating authority must include cross-border privileges. We verify customs paperwork is filed before you leave and make sure your insurance meets Canadian requirements. Hotshot is popular for urgent auto parts and oilfield equipment moves across the Alberta border.

When is hotshot demand strongest?

Hotshot demand tracks two main cycles: oilfield activity (strongest when oil prices are above $60/barrel, primarily Permian Basin, Bakken, and Eagle Ford) and construction season (March-November). When both cycles overlap in spring and summer, hotshot rates and load availability are at their peak. Winter sees softer demand outside of oilfield regions.
